The word pernicious means having a harmful effect, especially in a gradual or subtle way. For example, if you’ve been lied to for a long time but didn’t know it until the truth came out, the affects can be devastating. Or perhaps your worldview is anti-Biblical; that man is basically good. That man must pursue self-fulfillment to the fullest extent….to follow his heart. Psalm 52:3 says “You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth.”

Note, the Psalmist refers to those “who love evil.” Popular socialist philosophers, and secular humanists by pass this truth that evil exists. Carl Rogers, a psychologist with a humanistic approach says “I do not find that evil is inherent in human nature.”

These early century humanist philosophers have gradually brainwashed those willing to believe their false ideologies…..the pernicious lie. We have a world full of people following this pernicious lie…..That man is but a material beast….or just “follow your heart” or…Man must save himself through self-oriented pursuits. Or, Man is a product of mindless, purposeless forces. Or, as Clarence Darrow former leading member of the ACLU said “The purpose of man is like the purpose of the pollywog – to wiggle along as fast as he can without dying; or to hang to life until death takes him.” Here’s one more quote from David Brown, former head of Sierra Club: “While the death of young men in war is unfortunate, it is no more serious than the touching of mountains and wilderness areas by mankind.”

The contemporary culture of the day is living this pernicious lie. Does the contemporary wonder if he has a purpose beyond himself? Does the contemporary wonder if there is any meaning to his life? Does the contemporary wonder why evil is in the world? Does the contemporary wonder where evil came from at all? Does the contemporary believe there is any foundation for ethics and morals?

Romans 8:13-14 says “For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

Galatians 5:16-17 says “…Live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other so that you do not do what you want.”

Dear Christian, don’t be taken captive by the unspeakable destruction around us. Let us not turn our ear away. We have been saved by grace through faith. At Liberty Christian Fellowship, we pray that others will receive Christ as Lord & Savior and realize their need for a Savior. That life in Christ is the only way to living eternally with Him in heaven…..lifting all up in liberty.
