Jeremiah 15: 19-20 says, “19 Therefore, thus says the LORD, “If you return, then I will restore you- Before Me you will stand; And if you extract the precious from the worthless, You will become My spokesman. They for their part may turn to you, but as for you, you must not turn to them. 20 “Then I will make you to this people A fortified wall of bronze; and though they fight against you, they will not prevail over you; for I am with you to save you and deliver you,” declares the LORD.
Tolerance is an allowable amount of variation from a specified standard. Let me repeat that. “Tolerance is an allowable amount of variation from God’s specified standard.” When it comes to God’s immutable truth, there is no amount of variation that cannot have a harmful effect. Galatians 5:9 says, “A little leaven, leavens the whole lump.” The context of that statement is 7 you were running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from Him [meaning Christ] who calls you. 9 A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough.”
Tolerance teaches us that there is no Godly standard. When someone sins in public life, the media pundits never discuss the behavior in terms of how God’s 10 Commandments define right and wrong. Someone lies or steals and people in the media discuss how people on the other side also are doing it. But as God’s people, we know that is not God’s standard. God also says, rather intolerantly, in Rom 6:23 “The wages of sin is death.”
So, in fact, we know God is intolerant about sin – otherwise He never would send anyone to Hell for sinning, and rejecting the forgiveness explained in John 3: 18, which says, 18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
In Mark 8:15, Matt. 16:6 and 11-12, and in Luke 12: 1 Christ “cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” Leaven in this sense is an agent that infiltrates God’s standard with what today we call “political correctness.” Political correctness communicates the policies the government promotes supersede and take precedence over the commands of God. As people who say we love God the most, with all our heart, souls and minds, per the Greatest Commandment explained by Jesus in Matt 22: 37-38, we should not be letting “political correctness,” skew our perception of what God calls right and wrong.
Tolerance which disregards God’s standard for truth is the leaven that is leavening our society. Standing objectively on God’s truth by taking His word literally is how we get lifted up in Liberty.
