(1) Walk Thru The Word: Romans 8: 12—17 (ESV)
Not Debtors & Slaves, But Being Led As Sons & Heirs
12So then, brothers we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
(2) Walk Thru The Word: Romans 8: 18—25 (ESV)
Contemporary Suffering Is Not Comparable to Future Glory
18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

(4) Belief Liberates Us from Being Slaves, Indebted to God for Sin
In Rom 6:3, God baptizes us into the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, which Rom 8:12 tells us releases us from being 12debtors to sin, meaning those who owe an obligation to pay back or discharge a debt from having sinned against God) to the flesh, and from living according to the flesh (what merely is of human origin or empowerment which is displeasing to the Lord).
John 3:16 tells “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Our Debt of Sins …
- are forgiven
- Psalm 32: 2 & Rom 4: 8 — blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
God Imputes Us with Righteousness
- (Rom 3: 22, 5:17 & 21, 8:10, 10:6, Gal 2:6, 2Cor 5:21)
- Phil 1:11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
- Phil 3:9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
(5) Rom 8: 12-13 As Indebted Sinners We Must Act To Accept Salvation
13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, (the separation that always comes with divine closure), but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body (your personal sin nature), you will live.
Because we physically are born indebted to sin, to obtain eternal life and live for God/Christ, John 3:16 tells “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
To believe means to …
- have faith in, trust in,
- respond to the sacred significance of the Lord’s (Holy Spirit’s) persuasion.
- participate in God’s in-birthing of faith that leads to receiving/accepting and placing confidence in The Finished Work of Christ on The Cross, which completely, once and for all, satisfied God’s wrath against sin for our salvation. Christ became the propitiation of our salvation.)
- PROPITIATION, noun propisia’shon.
1) The act of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the act of making propitious.
2) the atoning sacrifice Christ offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men. Romans 3:25. 1 John 2:2.
Rom 3: 23-25 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
(6) Rom 8: 15-16 Belief In Christ Legalizes Our Adoption as Sons & Heirs who Are Led By the Spirit
We choose whom leads us. we choose whom we follow
Rom 8:15b …but you have received the Spirit (Holy Spirit) of adoption as sons (as a result of receiving the Spirit of God into our souls we are accepted and received legally into the divine family as sons of God, under the condition of being true disciples of Christ,), by whom we cry, “abba! (used as the term of tender endearment by a beloved child – i.e. in an affectionate, dependent relationship with their father; “daddy,” “papa.”) Father!”
16The Spirit himself bears witness (To make by personal presence a solemn declaration under oath, for the purpose of establishing or making proof of some act to a court) with our spirit that we are children of God, (dependent inhabitants who rely upon God as a parent) 17and if children, then—heirs of God and fellow/co-heirs (a joint participant as co-inheritor) with Christ,
NLT — For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
- The Prodigal Son, squandered his inheritance but never lost his sonship!
(7) Suffering Certifies Our Salvation
Rom 8:16 – 18
The process for realizing our salvation and status as children and heirs of God is …
17b…provided we suffer through the sanctification process by “sympathizing with Christ to feel what He feels;
Rom 12: 2 “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind,” which means “think God’s thoughts to feel what God feels, so we are motivated to do what God wants us to do.
- Rom 12: 1-2 1I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
- Certification = verifies we possess certain qualifications or meet certain standards, which God proves by testing us through suffering.
…in order that we may also be glorified with him (justified in close identification with the Lord, to ultimately participate in the unique glorification believers experience at Christ’s return).
18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us
(8) 1) We Have been Saved 2) We are Being Saved 3) We Will Be Saved [bctt tweet=”Rom 8: 13 – 15 The “if – then” proposition is — if we walk in the spirit we get Righteousness” username=”LibertyCF3″]
There are 3 tenses / time frames or Dispensations of our salvation
Was this accomplished as Christ …
- We Have been Saved = Justified & Positioned we are seated and raised with Christ in the Heavenliness Eph 1:20, 2:6
- Eph 2:6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
- Colossians 3:1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
- We are Being Saved = We are being Sanctified & Empowered to Overcome Sin to be made more holy and Christ-like as we walk in our salvation
- John 17;17 – Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
- 2 Cor 3:18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1 Peter 3:15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
- 1 Pet 3:15 indicates there is a witnessing component to our growth in sanctification.
- Hebrews 12: 5 -6 5And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. 6For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
- We Will Be Saved from The presence & power of Sin. When we will be glorified, raptured, changed in the twinkling of an eye, translated from living through death to eternal life (Isa 25:8,9 & 27:13, Matt 16:27, Matt 24:30-31 1 Cor 15:20, 23, 51, 1 Thes 1:7 &10, 4:13-18, 2 Thess 2:1-2, Rev 14:13, Rev 20:5-6 & 11-14)
- Isaiah 25:8,9 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it…
- Isaiah 27:13 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the great trumpet shall be blown, and they shall come which were ready to perish in the land of Assyria, and the outcasts in the land of Egypt, and shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.
- Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done.
- Matthew 24:30-31 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory… 31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
- Matthew 25:31 When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne.
- 1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
- 1 Thessalonians 4:13 —18 13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. 15For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.
- 1 Corinthians 15:20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
- 1 Corinthians 15:23 But each in his own turn: Christ the first fruits; then at His coming, those who belong to Him.
- 1 Thessalonians 1:10 and to await His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead–Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath.
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7 and to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels
- 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, a 2not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
- Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven telling me to write, “Blessed are the dead–those who die in the Lord from this moment on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labors, for their deeds will follow them.”
- Rev 20: 4- 6 The First Resurrection (perhaps the 1st rapture post Millennial Kingdom) 4Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also, I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.
- Revelation 20:5-6 The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection. 6 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection…
- Rev 20: 11-14 The Second Death — 11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
(9) Sin Careened creation off course from god’s original intention
Rom 8:19 For the creation (that which God made out of nothing, particularly and primarily people).
19Creation waits with eager LONGING for the revealing of the “sons of God. = small “s” = humans. Not only will we humans be changed but eventually so will all of God’s creation.
20For the creation was subjected to futility, (lacking in its original meaningful purpose vanity, emptiness, unreality, purposelessness, ineffectiveness, or any meaningful end; nonsense instability, frailty; false religion, Also lacking purpose or any meaningful end; nonsense.) not willingly, but because of him who subjected (God put creation under the futile consequence of sin) it, in hope
(10) Creation is Suffering from 3 Groaning’s
- 22For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.
- 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
- 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Wesley: 8:20 The creation was made subject to vanity – Abuse, misery, and corruption. By him who subjected it – Namely, God, Gen 3:17, 5:29. Adam only made it liable to the sentence which God pronounced; yet not without hope.
Wesley: x8:21 The creation itself shall be delivered – Destruction is not deliverance: therefore, whatsoever is destroyed, or ceases to be, is not delivered at all. Will, then, any part of the creation be destroyed? Into the glorious liberty – The excellent state wherein they were created.
(11) Rom 8: 13 – 15 The “if – then” proposition is — if we walk in the spirit we get Righteousness
- Rom 8:13 13For if you live (daily walk) according to the flesh (natural sinful inclination which is hostile to God) you will die, *be separated from God’s life either now and/or in the His future glory but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
- Rom 8:14For all who are led (taken hold of) by the Spirit of God are sons of God (born again descendants, who now share the same nature).
- 15For you did not receive the spirit (the small “s’ indicates we did not receive into our spirit, the part of us which animates the body, and which also is the rational part of us, that perceives and either grasps or rejects divine and eternal things. It is the part of man, and upon which the Spirit of God exerts its influence) of slavery (the bondage of decay that is perishing, with a sense of fear, devoid of buoyancy of spirit and lacks trust in God, such as is produced by dead thoughts,) to fall back into fear, (withdrawal because of feeling inadequate, without sufficient resource)
12) Discipleship is Determined by a
Daily Direction that Leads to a Desired Destination
Eugene Peterson, I think, said, “Discipleship is a long obedience in the same direction.”
Measuring Discipleship Competence =
A Factor of FOAM
Faith, Obedience, Attitude & Motive
Bottom Left —
If the seed of God’s Word lands in hearts that are like ROCKY SOIL,
it grows up, yet withers due to no moisture. This the of heart may receive Christ but fails to follow through and obtain fellowship, Bible study and accountability group.
= No growth, no fruit no yield = No Discipleship!
Top Left —
If the seed of God’s Word lands in hearts that are like Thorns, it grew up, but gets choked out.
Could be from world’s attack, persecution, hardship, whatever we allow to cause us to be bitter, and won’t submit it to God for Him to make us better.
Bottom Right —
If the seed of God’s Word lands on the PATH, where there is a lot of the world’s traffic, it has a very promising start, but it gets trampled by too many worldly influences and the birds (symbol of Satanic influences) devour it.
Top Right = Most productive for the Kingdom
If the seed of God’s Word falls and gets planted into hearts that are like GOOD SOIL, the life that is discipled will grow 100 x!!!
Discipleship Direction is Determined by the Activities We engage in. Should include personal Bible study, accountability, witnessing, sharing our faith in testimony. (You only have a testimony if you are stepping out in faith and doing something for God.
(13) Rom 8:4a The “if – then” proposition is — if we walk in the spirit we get Righteousness
Rom 8: 24 – 25 24For in this hope expectant, trust and confidence, an assurance of what is certain) we were saved (healed, preserved and rescued, in that which we will precisely possess in the near future) Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Waiting can be a form of suffering
Waiting Right Is A form of Strengthening
Isaiah 40: 13 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.
Wait = to stretch & telescope out the neck to see
The Waits were itinerate nocturnal Christmas carolers, who worshipped and waited upon the Lord with singing!
Rom 15: 4 4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Romans 4:18 — In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.”
- Colossians 1:5 (NLT) which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.
- Colossians 1:5 (NLT) which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News.
- Titus 2:13 (NLT) while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed.
- 1 Corinthians 13:13 Three things will last forever–faith, hope, and love–and the greatest of these is love.
- Titus 1:2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began

In Communion We honor Christ …
The Good Shepherd Who Restores Our Souls (Psalm 23: 1-3)
And Who Is Our Resurrection And Source of Abundant Life
(John 14:6 & John 10:10)
In John 11, as Jesus was about to raise Lazarus from the dead, He told Martha, “23… “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”
1Cor. 11: 23- 26 the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
Let’s partake.
25In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Let’s Drink. [email-download-link namefield=”YES” id=”326″]
