The Second Commandment deals with the HOW of worship, it forbids false worship it COMMANDS true worship.
Exodus 20 verse 4-6 says “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God am a jealous God punishing the children for the sin of their fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
It’s an awesome responsibility and privilege for a parent to teach and learn with their children how to worship God together as a family.
Verse 5 of Exodus 20 says God is a jealous God; meaning God has a holy jealousy. There’s only one God and He sits on Heaven’s throne. God always was, always is and always will be. We have no right to worship anything or anybody but HIM! Anything you love more than God, fear more than God, serve more than God, value more than God is your false god!
In Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” THIS IS TE FIRST AND GREATEST COMMANDMENT. THESE ARE JJESUS’ OWN WORDS! Idolatry breaks the greatest commandment!
You can have idols in your heart without making them with your hands. We have made gods of ourselves. A “Me First” mentality on Black Friday or sports replacing Sunday worship is an example of putting “pleasures” first before God.
2Timothy 3:2 says “People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy”.
Philippians 3:18 says “Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things.”
Matthew 10:37 says “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Putting God first doesn’t mean you love your family any less, it means you really love them more because your human love is augmented with God’s love. Your children must see your love for God is the most important thing in your life. If your love for God is lukewarm or if you experience boredom in your worship, they will too. Make your worship of God contagious for your family! Let your children hear you express praise to the Lord! Psalm 118:24 says “This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.” What a perfect way to begin your day – by letting your family hear you shout this psalm every morning!
Finally, talk about the idea of an invisible God, helping your children understand the difference between imaginary and invisible. Warn your children of the occult.
Obeying God’s Ten Commandments is demanding and delightful, which lifts your family up in liberty. [email-download-link namefield=”YES” id=”226″]
