Commandment number four in Exodus 20 verse 8 says “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” In Mark 2:27-28 Jesus said “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
Sabbath means rest. Genesis 2:2-3 says “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing so on the seventh day He RESTED from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he RESTED from all the work of creating that He had done.” This is called CREATION REST.
God rested to pause for reflection, to rejoice in His Creation. God did not rest because He was tired. God is Sovereign, HE DOES NOT GET TIRED! Isaiah 40:28 says “He will not grow tired or weary”. Creation rest pertained to God Almighty. [bctt tweet=”Jesus came to complete the work of redemption, when Jesus bowed His head on the cross and said “it is finished” in John 19:30, His work was done. Matthew 11:28 says “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. Jesus is our rest.” username=”LibertyCF3″]
The next day of rest the Bible talks about is covenant rest. Covenant rest pertained to the nation of Israel. God gave His special covenant people, the Jews, a special day of rest- the seventh day, (Saturday), the last day of the week. This Old Testament Sabbath was to be a sign of the covenant between God and the children of Israel, as stated in Exodus 31:13.
The Sabbath was supposed to be a blessing to Israel. But they contorted it so much, it became a heavy burden. The Jews added to the Word of God and found many ways to break the Sabbath. Jesus would heal and do works of love and mercy on the Sabbath and was hated by the Pharisees for it; they accused Jesus of being a Sabbath-breaker. In Matthew 15:6 Jesus said “Thus you nullify the Word of God for the sake of your tradition”. Jesus then quoted Isaiah 29:13-14 stating “these people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” “They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.”
Calvary rest is the fulfillment of the Sabbath for us in today’s church. Jesus came to complete the work of redemption, when Jesus bowed His head on the cross and said “it is finished” in John 19:30, His work was done. Matthew 11:28 says “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest”. Jesus is our rest. He sits at the right hand of the Father. Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament Sabbath.
Sunday is our Sabbath day of rest. Mark 1:9 says Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. In John 20:19-21, these things all took place on the first day of the week: (1) Jesus met with His disciples after His resurrection (2) The disciples were commissioned to preach the gospel (3) The Holy Spirit was imparted to the apostles. In Acts 2:1, the church was born on Pentecost, a Sunday. Jesus came out of the grave on the first day of the week; thus it is call “The Lord’s Day” in Revelation 1:10.
Keep the Lord’s Day Holy. Attend church regularly, Jesus has set us free to love and serve Him, now this is a definite day of Liberty that will lift you and your family up in liberty! [email-download-link namefield=”YES” id=”236″]
