A Faithful Female Named Phoebe Carries Paul’s Letter to Rome
1I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae, 2that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.
3Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. 5Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in Asia.
6Greet Mary, who has worked hard for you.7Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners. They are well known to the apostles, and they were in Christ before me.
(2) Walk Thru The Word: Romans 16: 17-23 (ESV)
disregard Those Who cause doctrinal divisions
16Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.
17I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. 19For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. 20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
21Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen.
22I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord.
23Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.
(3) Walk Thru The Word: Romans 16: 24-27 (ESV)
God’s gospel strengthens us to obey
24The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
25Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages 26but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

See colored Map of all journey’s, including Paul’s Prisoner Passage Marked In Green
Last week, we saw Paul is in Corinth, writing to the church in Rome, where he’d like to visit, but God is directing him to take an offering or contribution back to Jerusalem, from where he hopes to make the long trip. Paul wrote the letter to the Romans while in Corinth.
This week, May 5, 2019 we see Paul is in Corinth and is being supported by Phoebe, who is a servant of the church at Cenchreae, which is just southwest of Corinth. And Paul gives her the letter to carry to the Roman church, while he presumably heads back down to Jerusalem to deliver an offering to the saints there who have been impoverished by persecution and a famine.
(6) Romans 16: 1-2 (ESV) Phoebe faithfully Carries Paul’s Message To Rome
1Paul commends — verifies sister Phoebe has established herself as a faithful servant (deaconess, who “thoroughly raises up dust by moving in a hurry to minister under the inspiration of the Lord to carry out His plan for His people as a waiter) of the church at Cenchreae.
2that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints (set apart by, or for, God, holy, sacred. Those being conformed to “likeness of nature with the Lord” because they are “different from the world.), and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron (a Protector/guardian but Paul uses the female version of the word “patroness, protectress a female guardian”) of many and of myself as well.

- Acts 18:26 as having received “Apollos” into their family, to instruct him more perfectly. Acts 18: 24-27 24Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. 25He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus.
- The church in their house also is mentioned in 1 Corinthians 16:19,
- 1 Corinthians 16:19 The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prisca greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.

(9) Romans 16: 17
Disregard Those Who Divide with Deceitful Doctrines
17I appeal (urge, invite invoke) to you, brothers, to watch (regard attentively & MARK, scrutinize, observe, fix one’s (mind’s) eye) out for those who cause divisions dissension which wrongly separate people into pointless / groundless factions. Stress how someone is entrapped and caught by the devices of their own personal bias & carnal thinking) and create obstacles (Contrary Obstacles = those that are theologically significant) to the doctrine (the doctrinal teaching authored by God/Christ, the Lord,) that you have been taught; avoid them.
(10) Romans 16: 17 obstacles to salvation and discipleship include Works Systems & Deceitful Doctrines about Christ!
Obstacles to salvation and discipleship are created through …

The words I say to you, I do not speak on My own. Instead, it is the Father dwelling in Me, performing His works.

(11) Rom 16 :18 Those Who Spread Deceitful Doctrines Serve Themselves & Not God
18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites and by smooth talk (plausible sounding verbal quips that justify their position) and flattery (language artfully adapted to captivate the hearer) they deceive the hearts of the naive (innocent , guileless, unsuspecting simple people, who fear no evil from the one teaching them, who is operating from a higher level of sophistication.)
Deceived = “hood-winked”, describing someone taken in, and enslaved by, Satan (sin, darkness).
Stongs # 1818 /eksapatáō (“deceived into illusion”) emphasizes the end-impact of deception of missing true reality because “biting on the bait that brings the hook!
It’s from where we derive the expression: “Swallow it hook, line and sinker” to denote one who is thoroughly inundated in a lie and misconception.
- Someone who is an expert in a field can more convincingly lie and deceive us about information pertaining to that field, because they have credentials, and can use the right words that make them sound like experts in the field, so we unquestioningly accept what they say.
- Because we give them the benefit of a doubt as being experts and good people who want to help us, we also do not effectively question the pat and flimsy answers they give us, when we question why they’ve answered a particular question.
- Consider a court of law where there is a skilled prosecutor who says an accused has done something, and that accused person is represented by a skilled defender lawyer. Both experts sound convincing when they present their case, so how do you know which one is telling the truth? The Jury gets to examine the evidence and review what was written and recorded about every spoken word during the trial.
- 2 Corinthians 11: 12- 15 12And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
- The solution to religious deception is for the hearers to go home and search the Scriptures for themselves. That’s why I put dozens and dozens of verses up on the screen to make it easier for you to become a student of the word. When you leave church on Sunday, and go home to study your Bible, I expect you to enter your own personal version of the LCF School of Bible, and search the Scriptures and the commentators who are members of the historical body of Christ to make your own determination of what the Scriptures say, and how they apply to your lives.
- 2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
Their life style lacks the fruit of the Spirit or is inconsistent with it.
Matthew 7: 15-23 – 15“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? 17So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
Catholic doctrine of celibacy is suited to attracting homosexuals who raped boys. Catholic doctrines built in man’s tradition changes the rules of what is written. Thus they want to change the Bible and the Constitution upon which it is based.

(13) Romans 16: 19 Obeying With Wisdom Opens The Way for God’s Peace To Crush Satan Under Our Feet
19For your obedience (submissiveness, compliance that conforms conduct to God’s commands, ) is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise (wise, learned, cultivated, skilled, clever. Also – one whose action is governed by piety and integrity (that which encompasses the whole moral character) and accordingly is a suitable person to settle private quarrels, 1 Corinthians 6:5.) Also forming the best plans and using the best means for their execution: so of God, Romans 16:27):
- Wise = Ephesians 5:15 15Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
- The Wisdom from above is explained in James 3:13-18 13Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
- Rom 16:27 God is wise.
- 1 Cor. 1: 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
- as to what is good (what originates from God and is empowered by Him in our lives, through faith.) and innocent (sincere and blameless because it is not mixed and tainted by sinful motives) as to what is evil. (inner malice flowing out of a morally-rotten character)
(14) Romans 16: 24-27 The Grace of God’s Gospel Strengthens US
19For 20The God of peace (a state of national tranquility. Also good order, as G-O-D stands for Good, Orderly Direction. God responds to us doing things His way by Crushing Satan) will soon CRUSH (break in pieces, shatter, crush, bruise.) Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
- Revelation 12:13 NAS) And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.
- he’ll bruise heel = a) Satan will trip up our walk in Christ and b) will bruise the heels of Christ’s that were nailed to the Cross
- hell crush Satan’s head
- Revelation 12:13 NAS) And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.
Barnes Commentary says of Romans 16:20 And the God of peace – The God who promotes peace; Romans 15:33.
Will bruise – The “language” here refers to the prediction in Genesis 3:15. It here means to “subdue, to gain the victory over.” It denotes Paul’s confidence that they “would” gain the victory, and would be able to overcome all the arts of those who were endeavoring to sow discord and contention among them.
Satan – The word “Satan” is Hebrew, meaning originally “an accuser, a calumniator,” and then “an enemy.” It is given to the prince of evil spirits from this enmity to God and human beings. He is here regarded as the “author” of all attempts to promote discord in the church, by whomsoever those attempts were made. Hence, they who attempt to produce divisions are called “his ministers;” 2 Corinthians 11:15. God would disappoint their malignant purposes, and promote the prevalence of peace.
The grace – The favor; the mercy, etc. The Lord Jesus is the Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6; compare Luke 2:14; John 14:27), and this expression is “a prayer” to him, or an earnest wish expressed, that the design of his coming might be accomplished in promoting the prevalence of order and peace; compare 1 Corinthians 16:23; Revelation 22:21.

The Gospel of Grace Strengthens Us To Be Obedient in Faith
Romans 16:24 — The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
Because certain manuscripts do not contain vs 24, it is included in the footnotes of many translations.
(Re: vs. 24, the NAS has it in brackets. KJV includes it as part of the regular text. The ESV, NLT do not, but contain a footnote designating that some transcripts include it.)
The message in the Doxology (a portion of worship in which a hymn in praise of the Almighty is offered to give glory to God) is that The Gospel Strengthens us — 25Now to him who is able to strengthen (to make fast, establish, fix firmly, increases the ability to direct ourselves towards God; to render constant, confirm, one’s mind ) you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery (the counsels of God, once hidden but now revealed in the Gospel or portion of Scripture; the Christian revelation generally; particular truths or details of the Christian revelation.) that was kept secret for long ages 26but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith— 27to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.
See also Jude 1: 24-25 24Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
Re: Mystery –
2 Thessalonians 2:7 NAS: For the mystery of lawlessness or KJV = iniquity
1 Timothy 3:16 NAS: great is the mystery of godliness
